Built in 1412 during the height of the Sukhothai Kingdom, Wat Sorasak was commissioned by Nai Intha Sorasak, after whom it is named. The temple’s standout feature is its Sri Lankan–style bell-shaped chedi, which rises from a square base supported by the sculpted forequarters of elephants. In ancient Thai culture, elephants represented both royal power and spiritual guardianship, making this design both symbolic and visually striking. White elephants in particular are auspicious in Thailand.

Have been there many times for photo opportunities. Wat Sorasak, “chedi surrounded by elephants”. From detailed temples to one of Thailand's most famous beers, the elephants in Thailand certainly have a good reputation. Chang, which means elephant, is Thailand's national animal. There are several reasons why this giant animal was chosen as Thailand's national symbol, and an important reason was that the Thai people celebrated the elephant's incredible strength, durability and longevity.
